For the first time, in April 2000, responsibility for the film industry, film culture and education was brought under one roof at the FILM COUNCIL, while retaining the expertise of the other three national agencies–Scottish Screen in Scotland, Sgrîn Cymru Wales in Wales and the Northern Ireland Film and Television Commission (NIFTC) in Northern Ireland. Already, the benefits of this significant step for the film industry have been felt. National Lottery funding has greatly benefited the industry throughout the UK, and has enabled our strategic bodies to develop new approaches to public funding for film as well as developing innovative training and education initiatives, including the FILM COUNCIL’s ambitious First Light scheme which introduces children and young people to filmmaking.
