Over the last 15 years the creative industries have become a key part of the UK economy. The sector accounts for 7.3% of GDP (£60bn), has grown at twice the rate of the economy as a whole, and employs 1 million people (DCMS, 2008; The Work Foundation, 2007). This importance is reflected in policy rhetoric at national and regional levels. The majority of the creative industries are based in London, with other key nodes in the UK’s core cities.
